Have you ever been frightened by a house when you were a child? The type of house where you heard strange things happened?
This shirt is an artistic attempt to reconnect childhood fears of a 1922 mansion, originally meant to be a beautiful private residence, only to be bought and turned into a mental sanitarium that fell into disarray. By the 1950's, the residence had been sold and became the Clovis Avenue Sanitarium. Under this new ownership the stories began of naked patients laying in the hallways, screams all hours of the night, dead bodies stacked in the basement, patients being tied to the beds and toilets... This is where the artist feels the connection strongest to this story, his image of this place in his youth. This is where he chooses to have his artwork come into focus with this tribute design.
After the sanitariums inevitable closure and years of paranormal happenings reported within the walls of the now renamed Wolfe Manor, its status was solidified as one of the most haunted places in California until it was torn down in late 2014. Rest in pieces.
Front image: Text used to advertise the sanitarium surrounds the once grand but now demolished building looming over bodies walking aimlessly. Are the spirits walking into or outside the sanitarium to meet you?
